Is Mary Kay A Scam? - NO!

I heard a negative comment the other day that made me want to answer that question.

A Viable Business Opportunity
Which Has Stood the Test of Time
Mary Kay is a cosmetics company that sells a variety of products, primarily skin care and color cosmetics, through a direct sales approach.  This means that an independent sales force member, also known as a consultant, of the company sells to an individual and makes a certain commission from the sales.  Because some people don't understand direct sales, they often relate some companies with being pyramid schemes.  This may lead you to ask if Mary Kay is a scam or is it a viable business opportunity for making money?

One reason people have negative opinions about direct sales in general and Mary Kay in particular is because of the high turn - over rate in direct sales.  If people are leaving without being successful it can’t be a real business, can it?  But people join the business opportunity for many reasons and for some, when they feel that their needs have been met, they leave. Others just don’t apply themselves to the techniques of sales and they just don’t take advantage of the training available to help them with the business.

Keep in mind however, that a high turn over rate doesn’t automatically mean scam!

Now, let’s look at the failure rate of businesses in general.  It’s said that 90% of businesses will fail in the first five years.  But here is something even more startling.  A study by Dun and Bradstreet found that “90% of small businesses that fail do so because of a lack of skills and knowledge on the part of the owner.”

The great thing about starting and continuing a business with Mary Kay is that you are taught business skills and can learn the information you need with the educational materials that the company provides.  In addition, you have an upline leader (called a Director) that guides you through your business every step of the way.  She teaches you the proven methods and strategies that have helped many  Mary Kay Consultants succeed.  In addition, there are team meetings and conferences that will help you stay up-to-date on the skills and strategies  necessary to maintain a successful business.  While most businesses struggle to survive, you have a winning formula to help you thrive.

Not everyone however, wants to have a long term career in direct sales.  One of the things that people are attracted to in the industry is its flexibility.  Some people are looking for a short-term fix for financial difficulties they may have and Mary Kay can be the solution.  For others, it may be a need to get out of the house and have something to do while socializing with others.  A Mary Kay business can be as little or as much as you want it to be.  You decide; you set the goals based on what you’re willing to do and let the Mary Kay System do the rest.

Another reason people tend to be wary of Mary Kay is because of its longevity.  Some people think you can only be successful if you jump in on the “ground floor” of a company. (This essentially means that a company is just starting up.)  Mary Kay has been around since 1963 – which is hardly the ground floor in 2013. In fact, Mary Kay is enjoying its 50th anniversary and yet the consultants are still finding success with the company.

It's OK to Copycat as Long as you
Copy the Right Cat!
This shows that you are never “too late” with Mary Kay.  Even though many people have heard the name, there are a surprising number of people who don’t have access to a Mary Kay Consultant.  New markets continue to open and expand and new Independent Beauty Consultants continue to climb the “ladder of success” to Directorship and beyond. So, there is room for everyone to succeed.    In fact, if you’re smart, you will “stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before you” and learn what worked well for them and emulate it. I have heard it said “It’s ok to be a copycat, as long as you copy the right cat!” And that is the beauty of a Mary Kay Business; it can be duplicated!

Mary Kay is not a scam.  It’s a legitimate direct sales opportunity that offers the training and support you need to run a successful business.  If you’re ready to get your Mary Kay business up and running or if you have any questions or comments, you can comment below or you can  connect with me today Here.
