Thinking Like a Retailer (Pat 2)

What Mary Kay Did Not Teach or What I Found Along the Way
What Else Can You Do
To Think Like a Retailer?

Thinking like a Retailer So, as I considered that concept, I looked at one of my Favorites at the time, JC Penney. It Begged the Question, What did JC Penney have that my Mary Kay Business did not have or more to the point, What Were the Tools I Needed to be Just Like JC Penney.  And Better Yet, What Tools could I Utilize that were not Available through Mary Kay?

 Tool 6 - Internet Presence

Blogging -  This is a great way to get out there in front of your current and prospective customers. What could you "talk" about in your blog, you might ask? Well, for Mary Kay you can give beauty tips, current fashion tips, How to's on how to contrast your make-up choices, how to use products, How to Clean cosmetic brushes. The sky is the limit here. Pick a product and explain it's usage and how it accompanies others. If you don't know what to write, read The Look or go to MK In-Touch to learn more.

Social Platforms - I am talking FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Google Plus to name a few. Pick one or pick them all. Here is where you are social and can "Talk Up" your product and services. This is your "commercial" if you will. But watch out how much time you spend on line!

E-Newsletters  - I know that we discussed that Mary Kay sent out a bi-monthly e-newsletter, but have you considered sending out one of your own? Mail Chimp is free and easy to use. So why not try it. This is where you put in your own sales and customer incentives and maybe a tip or two. Not sure about Mail Chimp? Look into Constant Contact or AWeber. You'll never go wrong creating your own email generated newsletter/Marketing Campaign.

Are Your Way to Stand Out From the Crowd!
Tool 7 - Self Generated Marketing Materials

Self generate Newsletter - As your business grows, you will want to be able to provide your customers with information about your business and about your products. You may also want to provide information about your upcoming sales. Creating a Newsletter either with Microsoft Word or Publisher may be the simplest way to go. This is your opportunity to shine and distinguish yourself form other consultants. Here you will show your creativity. And this is also a way to place a piece of information in reorder bags as well as a mailed letter.

Self generated Flyers - I loved creating Flyers. It's another way to distinguish yourself from other consultants by advertising your product, your services or your business opportunity. Microsoft Word or Publisher are the programs I personally used to create flyers.

Tool 8 - Out and About Marketing

Gardening Gifts - As a Mary Kay consultant, you are urged to go out and "warm chatter". Basically you talk to the people in a 3 foot radius around you, You are encouraged to add a little "gift" of a sample. But here's the thing; How do you differentiate yourself from the next consultant? Make the Warm Chatter "gift" into what Party Plan Divas calls a Gardening Gift. Basically you place in a small cello bag your business card, a sample or two (the current Look Card is great for this), a piece of candy (I used peppermints and Hershy's Kisses) and a coupon for your own prize or discount. Add a little confetti and Voila! You've created a party in an envelope. Now you are memorable and have "watered someone's Flowers

As an Independent Beauty Consultant, Thinking Like a Retailer may be somewhat of  a challenge. But if you use the tools available to you, you too can have a marketing department.
