The Wizard of Oz: A Business Parable

No, I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore Dorothy! In fact, I don’t think we’re in Oz either. Where we are is at a crossroads in life and we have to make some very important  decisions if we are to survive. Because, the days (and ways) of doing business (or creating an income stream to earn extra money) are changing rapidly and we just can’t sit around and wait for someone else to make something happen or to  make choices for us. As Mary Kay once said "You are either going to make things happen, or watch things happen or you are going to wait until it's too late and ask 'What Happened'" So, we have to adjust and grow  WITH the times or we are going to be left behind! (I’m not saying that there are flying houses or monkeys in your future, but you get the picture, right?)


Are you a Dorothy or are you a Munch-kin?

The Munch-kins were content to wait in their village and depend on the Wizard or on the Good Witch for advice. They were content to be afraid of moving past the obstacle of the Wicked Witch. They were mired in the status quo. It’s the way it always was, so it’s the way it always will be. Is this you? I hope not.

Dorothy, on the other hand, was whisked away to parts unknown. But here's the thing - she was willing to think outside the box and find a way to get what she wanted (which in her case was to get back home). To be fair, Dorothy had in her favor a few KEY things going for her.

·         She had a PLAN: Get to the Wizard

·         She had a PATH: Stick to the Yellow Brick Road

·         She had a PURPOSE: She wanted to get home to Auntie Em

·         She had a PROCESS: One step at a time; surround yourself with a support team and help others along the way.

This is what starting a home based, direct sales business is all about. You focus on the core Plan – Make more money, You stay on the  Path – By creating a successful direct sales business, You define your Purpose – To enjoy financial freedom  and more choices for you and your family and You embrace the Process – One sale at a time, one party at a time and help others along the way. I’m not saying that money is everything, but it sure goes a long way in giving us more choices in life.

Of course there are always going to be witches, flying monkeys, fields of poppies and even good intentions that are going to get in our way and divert us from doing the things we want to do. But by purposefully getting BACK to the PATH, we will  make more progress than those individuals who struggle with ‘shiny object syndrome’ and are always looking for instant gratification, quick and easy solutions or the “next best thing”.

If Dorothy had waited on the Wizard to come pick her up in his hot air balloon, she’d have been stuck in Munckin-land a long time and never have  made any progress at all! And the Scarecrow would still be stuck in a field, the Lion hiding in the woods and the Tin Man would be rusted out completely!
